Confused About Car Battery Charging Itself?

A car is probably one of the biggest and most important inventions in the history of humankind. But have you ever wondered, how does it function and what are its components? An automotive vehicle or a car runs mainly on fuel but a battery also plays a vital role in the smooth functioning of it.

With the use of a battery in a car, there is always a risk of it getting discharged from time to time but it doesn’t. Why? It is because the batteries have a feature of charging itself. A moving car utilizes the battery power and keeps charging it at the same time. But it is not enough. There is another concept called Recharging.

What is Battery Recharging?

A car battery or automotive battery can get discharged after using it for a while. If it were a normal kind of battery, it would have been used only once but the battery used in the automotives are rechargeable and thus keeps on charging. There are certain parts of the car which prevent the battery from becoming a completely dead battery.

How is the Car battery Charged?

There is a component in the car known as an Alternator among other parts. When the ignition is on and the car is moving, the alternator converts the mechanical energy generated by the crankshaft to electrical energy. The alternator is used to provide the converted electrical energy to all the electronic and electrical components like headlights, interior lights, dashboards, air conditioner etc. After supplying all the necessary electricity to all the parts of the car, if there is excess electricity left, it supplies it to the automotive battery to charge it. The alternator converts the AC power to the DC power and then transfers the electricity to the battery as a battery only runs on DC power.

The car battery contains the power to start the engine but the alternator provides the power to the battery to charge it when the car is on. The cells of a battery do not have the mechanism to generate electricity by themselves whether it is dead or alive, thus, it is required by an external source to supply with the necessary power to charge it every time the ignition is on.

What is a dead Car battery?

A dead battery means that the battery is completely discharged and is not able to recharge through external factors as well. Also, the voltage of the battery has gotten below 12V. There are certain reasons why an automotive battery gets dead. Some of them are –

1. Cold weather conditions or temperatures.

2. The car has not been used for a very long time.

3. If a light or anything is accidentally left on.

4. Alternator is not working properly.

Keeping up with the battery is very important if you own a car as it can cause serious problems in the middle of nowhere. Certain car and battery maintenance tips are there, it is very important to at least be aware of them for the better working and increased efficiency of your battery.
